System unit:- The box shaped part of your cpmputer is called as system unit.
- The system unit itself is the main computer.
- It houses motherboard (on which CPU is fitted), all the circuit boards (or cards), hard disk, CD/DVD drive,On/Off and reset switches and sockets at back for connecting monitor printer , mouse, modem and other peripherals to your computer.
- System unit used to come in two flavours - a) the desktop, and b) the tower type .
- But which the passage of time, the desktop type lost its popularity ,and now tower type system unit is generally preferred by buyers of PC. It usually houses the following components-
Motherboard:- A motherboard is one of the most essential part of computer system .It holds together many of the crucial components of a computer, inculuding the central processing unit (CPU).
- The microprocessor fits into the motherboard.
- Intel and AMD are the two of prominent companies that develop processor for PCs.
- The perfomance of microprocessor is measured through its speed.
- The "speed" of a processor (measured in Hertz or Hz.
RAM chips :- RAM chips are meant for primary storage. when we switch off the power supply , the contents of primary memory are lost. RAM chips having a storage capacity of 2GB - 4GB are common these days. They get fixed on the sockets present on the motherboard.
ROM BIOS chips :- ROM BIOS (Read only memory - Basic Input Output System) Chips cointain a set of instructions that take care of booting (Starting) a computer. As you switch on the computer, these chips take control of the computer. They are also mounted on the motherboard.
Expansion cards:-In addition to the RAM and ROM chips and microprocessor, motherboard has some empty expansion slots where expansion cards can be fitted that provide additional functionality to the computer such as advanced video, sound and graphics, ethernet/internet and extra memory(if
